| Marc W. Butler, R,C,I, was first elected to the New York State Assembly in 1995. He represents the 117th Assembly District, which includes Herkimer, Fulton and the eastern portion of Otsego County.
In 2002, Assemblyman Butler was appointed by the Assembly Minority Leader, Charles Nesbitt, to a leadership position, as Chairman of the Conference’s Program Committee. In his leadership position, Assemblyman Butler helps formulate and articulate the Conference’s position on a wide range of issues.
He serves on the Labor, Agriculture and Higher Education Committees. He also serves on the Legislative Commission on Dairy Industry Development.
Previously, Mr. Butler served two terms in the Herkimer County Legislature. In 1993, he was elected Majority Leader of the body. Prior to that, he was a Newport Village Trustee and also served as the village’s Deputy Mayor.
In 1986, he joined Utica National Insurance, New Hartford, NY as a Corporate Communications Specialist. Upon his election to the Assembly, he resigned from that position in order to serve as a full-time state legislator.
From 1976 -1986, Marc was a reporter for the Utica Observer Dispatch. He spent most of his 10-year career with the OD's Herkimer County Bureau Office, where he reported extensively on local government and politics.
In 2003, Marc was selected as the annual “Good Citizen” by VFW Post 7220, Middleville. He and his wife Susan, serve as Volunteer Chairs for the Herkimer County ARC’s Annual Wine Auction Benefit. He served as the Greater Utica United Way SEFA (State Employees Federated Appeal) Regional Chairman and the Valley United Way Chairman for the 2003-04 campaign.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from SUNY Potsdam.
A lifelong resident of the Mohawk Valley, he currently resides in the Village of Newport.
