Experience has shown that the most effective method of communicating with legislators is through regular mail; followed by fax, email, and phone calls, in that order (Petitions have relatively little impact). Although legislators receive large amounts of mail every day, they are most interested in hearing from their individual constituents. With that in mind, you can see why it is vitally important for you to become involved and to take action on a personal level as well! People are often quick to criticize legislators for not "listening" to the people they represent. It is interesting that most of these same people have never taken the time to write to, or speak with, their legislators! Here is an opportunity for you to become an active participant in the legislative process. This section of our site will provide you with direction (who to contact, sample letters, etc.) that will help you in becoming an active participant. Naturally, the content of our sample letters reflect the positions adopted by ABATE of NY, Inc as they relate to various issues. You may of course modify any letter to accommodate your personal view. However, if you do decide to change a letter, please do not include any reference that would indicate you are speaking on behalf of ABATE of NY, Inc. A great amount of work goes into establishing an official position regarding specific issues. Once a position has been adopted by the state body of ABATE, it is imperative that we stay "on message" in order to be effective. "Rogue warriors", despite their best intentions, can actually do harm to promoting our cause. Your involvement can make a real difference. Thank you for taking part. And thank you sincerely for helping us.
