OPPOSE REPEAL OF THE SUNSET CLAUSE

The letter below was written in response to my plea to Oneida County member Brian Cook, Our Chapter's very  first Legislative Coordinator. Copy and paste it into your own letter or edit with your own comments. Keep it brief and send it to Senators Clinton and Schumer. Or don't. The choice is still yours, this time anyway.

Dear Senator Clinton:

I am writing asking that you oppose Senate Bill 2476, “An Act to amend the USA PATRIOT ACT to repeal the sunsets. (Section 224 of the Patriot Act)”

Certainly, the threat of terror has been demonstrated with tragic acuity, so I understand the need for a robust policy to defend against future attacks. Unfortunately, because of the pace and urgency of its construction, I believe the Patriot Act raises serious legal and constitutional questions regarding its interpretation and application.

The breadth and scope of the sweeping changes left unknown all the possible fallout. For that very reason, the wisdom of authoring a sunset clause was incorporated into the document. Healthy debate and solemn reevaluation seem more than appropriate. The current sunset date ensures a necessary measure of scrutiny will be applied.

Please, I implore you to oppose Senate Bill 2476.

Respectfully,
